Professor Brian Cox, experimental physicist, quoting Carl Sagan

April 29, 2008, 11:09 am

From Brian Cox's TED presentation, What really goes on at the Large Hadron Collider:

These are the things: saturn V rockets and Sputnik and DNA and literature and science.

These are the things that Hydrogen atoms do when given 13.7 billion years.

Why Kurt Loder?

March 26, 2007, 11:50 am

For some reason, some person (or persons?) have been writing the name "KURT LODER" on street signs, mailboxes, and buildings around Bardstown Rd. in Louisville, KY.

The first time I saw "KURT LODER" on the side of a mailbox, it cracked me up. And I saw it again in other places, and it made me wonder, "Why KURT LODER?"

The world may never know!

I have every paycheck stub for every job I've had since I was 16. No one ever told me to save these, I just thought it was a good idea.

A few years ago, when my Mom moved my Granddaddy from his condo to an assisted living facility, she told me she found boxes filled with all his old paycheck stubs. He had saved all of them.

I visited my Mom and my Granddaddy yesterday. My Mom and my Granddaddy's friend Esther were talking about how Granddaddy had the propensity to let his car run low on gas. They asked him if he ever ran out and he said once he ran out, but coasted down a hill into a gas station.

I didn't tell them that while I was driving to the hospital that my car's low fuel warning light came on.

I read a Woody Allen quote a few weeks ago that really cracked me up.

I don't want to achieve immortality through my work. I want to achieve it through not dying.

My Granddaddy passed away this morning. While it wasn't unexpected, it is still upsetting. However, I am comforted by the fact that he will achieve some immortality through the influence he had on his family.

In my mind, having children is as close as we can get to God: to create something in our image and have a piece of ourselves live on after we're gone.

My Mom says I'm like him. I wish that I had known him better.

George Lucas on Akira Kurosawa

Nickie and I recently watched the Hidden Fortress and there was an interview with George Lucas on the DVD. He mostly tried to say that he didn't lift as much stuff from Kurosawa as he actually did for Star Wars, but the best part of the interview was when he said something like this:

Someone asked Kurosawa, "What is in your movies? What are your movies about?"

And Kurosawa said, "My movies are about the questions, 'Why can't people be happier?' and 'Why can't people be happier together?'"
